Somehow I forgot to include this last photo when I originally made the post…
Following are photos taken in the Haight-Ashbury district in San Francisco.
This guy’s name is Chris. He and I talked for a while about the importance of showing respect to people regardless of their physical appearance. I felt that he was uniqueliy suited to discuss this topic.
This group was friendly mostly because I gave them two dollars.
Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to talk with these two guys.
This girl’s name is Rainbow. Her fingernails and toenails were in bad shape, but she was friendly to talk to.
A fun little gift shop.
The best photo I took there was of a completely normal guy.

Matt,
Thanks for sharing your travels!! It’s great for someone who’s been stuck at work
It will be interesting to see what types of poverty you’ll be encoutering. What was the cause of hardship for most people you met in SF? I was talking with some friends about what you’re doing. An idea that came up was that you could stay at the shelters to really assess poverty in the US.
Can’t wait to see more!

Hey Matt – Here are a couple of your favorite recipes:
FANCY CANDIED YAMS
3 cups yams, drained (canned or fresh, cooked)
1/2 cup sugar
1/3 cup butter, softened
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 cup milk
2 eggs
Mix all the above together till smooth. Pour into a medium size (like 9”x13”) casserole dish. Top with the following:
1 cup shredded coconut (if you are making this for Scott Lemmon, leave out the coconut – or Matt will give you a lecture about remembering what people like and don’t like)
1/2 cup chopped pecans (refer to advice above)
1 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup butter, softened
1/3 cup flour
Combine the above and spoon on top of the yam mixture.
Bake at 375 for 25 minutes.
FIESTA SALAD (A Matt Lemmon original- I hope I get it right)
Cooked chicken (KereAna suggests starting with a rotisserie chicken from the grocery store – smart girl!)
Mixed Spring Greens (lettuce blend)
Cilantro – one bunch
Basil – if not included in the greens
Green Onions
Chopped Tomatoes
Lime juice – equivalent of one whole lime
Corn – one small can
Grated Cheese – cheddar/jack blend
Optional:
Black beans
Avocado, sliced or chopped
Red or green pepper, chopped
Jicama, chopped
Enjoy!

Well Kathy, I’d hate to say this, but you forgot 2 of the most important parts of the Fiesta Salad.
1: Creamy Salsa Dressing
2: Those little tortilla chip shreds (tortilla chip strips?)
Oh, and I vote Ernesto “the Bear” Guevara as well.
Peace

Matt,
Did you take a close look at the guy with the flaming pants? He is amazing!! Just like that Maralyn Monroe picture where her dress is blowing upwards to expose her legs, the flaming pants guy’s shirt is also floating in mid air.
Also,
That donut store in the background. Did they just walk out of there? Or, do the two live right above the store together? Because that would explain at least two questions I have. Those donuts have got to be good. I think this is the best pictute of S.F. part III. Even the tall guy on the right kind of looks like Phil Jackson. Did you really take this picture? I bet this picture is actually sold in the local gift shops. They most likely display it right next to the post cards with almost naked dudes in bright speedos on them.
Lastly, my vote goes for Ernesto, as long as you weren’t going to consider Cletus. Have a great day, and a fun trip!!!

Great site! Your trip looks like fun. Let me know if you need somewhere to stay in Honduras if you come through-plenty of poverty here! Although if you are scary, please disregard the previous invitation.

Nice site Matt… Your dad told me you were doing this and I must say I’m incredibly jealous. I expect it will be a fantastic experience. Some of your photos are phenomenal! What camera did you purchase? Did you take a photo class in school? Your composition is pure genius! Anyway, I’ll keep checking back. I expect it will be a “long strange trip” indeed!

Just wanted to tell you we’re all excited for you here and wish you the best of luck. Andrew especially would like to tell you of a couple hidden places in Brazil he’s ‘saving only for your knowledge.’ contact me back when you get the chance and I’ll let you know his email.

Hey Matt! Grammie and Bompa told me about your web site. It is very cool! They really enjoyed your visit. I noticed that your map shows that you will be coming very close to Detroit….When will you be this way? If we are still here, we would love to have you stay with us! Best of luck in your adventure!
Love,
Aunt Krissie

I vote for Barry. If not…then Ernesto.

Okay, so you have no clue who I am but let me just say this is an awesome idea. Got your site from my dad, David Boberg, who works with your dad at Countrywide in SoCal. Anyways, Very awesome idea and I can’t wait to follow along… however, it appears you spent 8 days in San Fran. How in the world are you gonna be in Mexico by November??? According to your map you are gonna go to Maine before you get anywhere close to Mexico. Once again, awesome site. Get some videos up for us. I’ll proudly spread the word about your journey.
P@
P.S. can you give us any idea some of the cities or locations you’ll be stopping in? Thanks.

Wow, Thanks for all the interest and support. I don’t know if I can respond to all the comments, but I’ll respond as much as I can!
Right now I am in Hyder, Alaska (population 64), in a honky tonk bar, the only place in town with wireless internet, trying to get some photos uploaded. I am here visiting my Great-Uncle Mims and his wife Irene. I was actually only in San Francisco for three days, but I’ve been busy traveling and meeting with people and whatnot since then. I should have some info from Napa Valley posted tonight. I will do my best to get an itinerary created and posted, so that people know when and where to expect me. (KereAna, is this something you could create?)
For the record, I did not create the Fiesta Salad recipe, I only came up with the IDEA of it, and KereAna created the recipe.
I’m glad people are enjoying the photos, I’ll try to keep them coming. I use two cameras, primarily my Nikon D-50, and I have three lenses, a normal one, a wide-angle, and a telephoto lense. I love the telephoto lense beause it goes from 22mm to 300mm, which if you don’t know about lenses, means that it is very versatile. Max, I’m expecially glad you liked the photo of the tall guy and the guy in the flashy pants.
I appreciate the offers of places to stay an visit. Please email KereAna at kereanab@gmail.com with suggestions and offers, as she is in charge of keeping my schedule lined up. Aunt Krissy especially please email KereAna because I would love to visit while in Detroit.
Thanks again to everyone for visiting, and thanks for the votes for the Teddy Bear’s name. No other votes for Cletus?

Hey Matt – Additions to the Fiesta Salad Recipe:
The dressing is Litehouse Salsa Ranch.
Also don’t forget to add fried tortilla strips or tortilla chips
Serve salad with the dressing and tortilla strips on the side for people to add as they like.
